Twisting
Functions of Twisting Postures:
- Twisting in your yoga asana practice is a great way to aid digestion, de-stress, energize the body and mind, and support spinal health.
- Twisting is a cleansing and detoxifying experience for both mind and body
- Twisting can be therapeutic for back pain
- Twists can serve as a neutral point between postures (back bend to forward bend for example) to keep the spine safe and healthy
Key Points for Twisting:
- While twisting, elongate the spine and support the twisting sensation throughout the spine
- The twisting sensation begins at the root and travels upward through the thoracic spine and ending in the cervical spine
- Stay within a range and depth that is comfortable for the body
- Twist to face right first (left second). This aids the natural direction of digestion within the ascending and descending colon
- Keep breathing
