The word Pranayama consists of: prana (the vital energy that is infinitely everywhere) and yama (to restrain or control). Pranayama is the fourth of eight limbs of yoga. In the practice of Pranayama, we control breath and practice breathing. Though breathing is an involuntary act, we can control our breath to create calming or invigorating experiences.
While practicing breath control, understand there is no need to exert or put yourself in an uncomfortable state of feeling short of oxygen. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, anxious, or any negative side-effects, stop the practice and return to your normal breath. Do not hold the breath if you have abnormal blood pressure, are pregnant, or have coronary problems. Always practice pranayam with care.
