Yoga Anatomy: The Energy BodySubtle and life force energy (prana) exists everywhere. It's in our bodies, the air, sunlight, water, and food. Prana is what keeps the body alive. This life force energy is what distinguishes a live body from a dead one - it keeps the heart beating and the organs functioning.
Within the Yoga Anatomy section, you will find information that guides exploration of the chakras and nadis, our energy centers and energy channels within the body. |
The ChakrasChakra means "wheel" or "disk". There are most commonly 7 major chakras represented in the body, though various texts present additional chakras in the hands and feet for example.
The seven major chakras are located along the spine running from root to crown and follow the vertical line of the Shushumna Nadi. The Ida and Pingala Nadis flow between or through the chakras depending on the text. Regardless, the crossing and intertwining of the lunar and solar, feminine and masculine, shakti and shiva, creates a polarity and a dance of energy within the body. Each of the chakras carries unique traits of consciousness, body functions, emotions, colors, sounds, elements, and more. These traits and elements can be supported, or likewise hindered, by our day to day activities, thoughts, relationships, etc. |
The qualities of our thoughts directly control the functions of the chakras. Negative thoughts weaken the chakra creating an imbalance, while positive thoughts strengthen and align the chakras. Wearing colors of the chakras can also help to strengthen them, even in the side of over-strengthening and creating an imbalance. We can meditate or practice asana focused on a specific chakra or the series of chakras to regain balance and support as well.
