Ayurveda 101
Ayurveda is a centuries old (5,000+ years!) holistic approach to health and longevity. This system of healing holds roots in India and has largely been passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition. In more 'recent' times (1,000+ years), these teachings have been recorded in texts.
Ayurveda stresses that we are all born with a unique blueprint, or constitution, that determines the state of our highest self. Within this blueprint, we are given our roadmap on our essential being and where our equilibrium resides.
Our constitution consists of three fundamental doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. Within each of us, we host a unique mixture of the three doshas which becomes our prakriti, or natural/given/born constitution.
Vata: Vata is a combination of air and ether elements, embodying their very qualities. When we connect with the vata qualities that exist within us all, we acknowledge the light, cold, dry, generous, free, creative, anxious, variable, and erratic self.
Pitta: Pitta is a combination of fire and water elements. When we connect with our pitta qualities that exist within us all, we acknowledge the hot, fiery, confident, intellectual, competitive, courageous, and alert self.
Kapha: Kapha is a combination of Earth and water elements. When we connect with our kapha qualities, we acknowledge the heavy, soft, compassionate, loving, grounded, stable, caring, slow, and strong self.
In support and acknowledgment of our prakriti, the science of Ayurveda provides nutritional guidelines, suggests habitual practices and incorporation of daily routine, and establishes identifiers for imbalances.
The holistic science of Ayurveda is a fascinating topic and we hope you choose to explore it more thoroughly! We do also offer a 10 hour online course that will serve as a great educational foundation to the topic as well as providing key take aways for implementing constitution specific routines, informed nutritional selections, and activity considerations.
